New lights for Thomas Dalton Park

Friday 29 October 2021

We’re replacing some of the lights and expanding the lighting coverage at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow with new energy efficient LED field lighting.

Council will install new lights and lighting poles to bring the lighting coverage at Thomas Dalton Park up to the current Australian Standards for sports fields lighting. Works are expected to begin in November and are expected to be complete by the end of the year, depending on weather.

During construction, sports clubs and the public will still have access to Thomas Dalton Park, however there may be some areas closed off at times for the public’s safety.

Wollongong City Council Director Infrastructure + Works (Acting) Joanne Page said that Council has seen a big increase in demand for the use of sports grounds across Wollongong.

“We want to support our local sports clubs to be able to make the most of Council infrastructure such as sports grounds and fields. One of the best ways we can achieve this is by improving lighting at sports ground to allow sporting clubs more time where they’re able to train and play, including at night,” Ms Page said.

“Good lighting is a cost-effective way we can improve the value of our existing facilities by significantly increasing the number of sporting activities that can take place.”

Council’s Sports Ground and Sporting Facilities Strategy 2017-2021 identifies lighting at sports grounds as one of the most significant assets that require upgrading to meet the increasing demand from our community.

“The new lighting at Thomas Dalton Park will be energy efficient with LED technology installed and will also use a wireless control system to lower maintenance costs,” she said.

“We’ve also considered the impacts of lighting pollution and by using energy efficient lighting we can control the direction and spread of light to minimise the potential impact on surrounding residents.”
