Learning City

In Wollongong, we value learning as a key to growth

"We learn throughout life, with and from one another, anywhere and everywhere, to belong, grow, adapt and thrive!"

We promote inclusive lifelong learning for all ages, contexts, and purposes, especially in our rapidly changing world. This means learning:

  • Throughout life, at all ages,
  • In diverse spaces, contexts and people groups, and
  • For personal, social, emotional and professional growth.

Our Learning City vision

Our vision is to support our community in embracing lifelong learning, adapting to change, and building a sense of belonging. We aim to create opportunities for everyone to grow and thrive, now and into the future. We want to collaborate to make quality learning opportunities accessible, fostering social harmony, sustainability and innovation.

To help achieve this vision, we've applied to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, which provides an international benchmark and would connect us with national and global best practices in lifelong learning.

Our learning goals

  • Goal 1 - Strengthen learning foundations
  • Goal 2 - Learning in communities
  • Goal 3 - Learning with nature
  • Goal 4 - Learning for work and the economy
  • Goal 5 - Learning for leadership and innovation

Learn anywhere

Learning happens everywhere, across all stages of life and in many different settings. From early childhood centres, schools, TAFE and universities to libraries, galleries, natural spaces, online platforms, community groups, learning for adults and U3A - learning is all around us and there are countless ways to learn, grow and connect.

Alongside local education and community organisations, we are committed to supporting lifelong learning. Together, we’re working to create inclusive and accessible opportunities that help individuals achieve their goals and contribute to a thriving community.

Resources for learning

Here are some more opportunities to learn in our community and online.

Promoting and celebrating inclusive, accessible learning

The programs and activities featured below are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all members of our community. Many of them place a strong focus on providing free or low-cost learning opportunities, supporting people with disability, and offering services for those who are unable to visit a library in person, such as through our Home Library Service.

Learning, Leadership and Innovation

Community groups and local initiatives play a vital role in fostering inclusive learning, celebrating achievements, and encouraging leadership and innovation across our community.

Learning through connection with place

Learning in and about nature helps build stronger communities, supports sustainability, and encourages curiosity, care, and lifelong learning.

Learning for wellbeing and connection

Outdoor activities and safety programs support healthy lifestyles, build community connections, and promote learning through nature and movement.

Learning for growth and innovation

We work together with local businesses, training providers, and community partners to foster learning opportunities that support employment, entrepreneurship, and a thriving local economy.

Events for learning
