The Illawarra escarpment provides a natural backdrop to our city. It has great cultural, heritage and environmental value.
With lush forests and panoramic views from lookouts such as Mount Keira, Mount Kembla and Sublime Point, our escarpment is a popular recreation area for residents and visitors.
Caring for the escarpment
Council manages some parts of the escarpment.
Large sections are also looked after by landowners and government bodies including the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
We have an Illawarra Escarpment Strategic Management Plan PDF, 2650.7 KB that explains what Council is doing to care for the escarpment.
There are also planning rules in place to make sure this natural asset is protected.
