Is 2025 your new career year?
Wollongong City Council has opened the application process for our next intake of cadets, apprentices and trainees.
We’re keen to hit the ground running in 2025 with the successful applicants appointed to their roles, and interested candidates should ensure they lodge their application this week.
“We’re opening these roles now so that the roles can start early in the New Year and Council’s newest cadets, apprentices and trainees can be welcomed into the organisation sooner rather than later,’’ Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
“We’re anticipating a significant number of applications for these roles, and I am sure that starting 2025 with a new role and opportunity will appeal to many people.’’

Council has a well-proven track record of offering targeted and purposeful training opportunities for careers in local government, and our next round for this program, as five positions on offer within Council. This is in addition to roles that were already offered and filled back in September.
The established program offers fulltime employment with time set aside for relevant tertiary or vocational studies. The roles are in areas as diverse as civil construction apprentices, construction carpenter, and a trainee in conservation land management.
“When you look at the changing labour market in our city, or see someone whose career isn’t meeting their personal goals any longer, this provides an option to move into a role like construction or development assessment,’’ Cr Brown said.
“At Council, we’re all about supporting our staff to have fulfilling and enjoyable careers while also delivering the services our community deserves and expects.
“We’re going to be working hard and quickly to make sure we’ve got the best people for these roles. I’m really looking forward to meeting the next cohort who will join our existing group of cadets, apprentices and trainees currently working across Council.’’
The positions on offer under the Cadets, Apprentices and Trainees programs are available on Council’s website from 29 November.
Applications close on 8 December, with assessments taking place between 12-13 December, and the successful applicants starting in February 2025.
“There is nothing quite like on-the-job training and Council’s cadets, apprentices and trainees program offers a professional pathway where you’re paid to learn on the job. It really is a win-win as a career opportunity,’’ Cr Brown said.
“We take our role as a local employer very seriously and a significant proportion of those who work for Wollongong City Council are those who live within our local government area. These are people who contribute daily to making Wollongong an enviable place to live, work and play. I have no doubt there are more people out there in the community who would like the opportunity to contribute to the greater good.’’
