Managing flood risk in our suburbs

Friday 22 August 2025

Wollongong’s unique location between the escarpment and the sea, means our Local Government Area is naturally prone to flooding. Managing this is a key challenge and priority for Council, particularly as we experience more frequent and intense storm events.

Since 1998, Council has spent more than $60 million with the support of Federal and State Governments on flood mitigation projects, flood studies, designs and the voluntary acquisition of some flood-affected homes. We’ll spend an additional $25M over the next 4 years.

Regular review of Floodplain Risk Management Studies - we have 11 across the Local Government Area - is essential due to our complex and dynamic flood environment. We’re also acutely aware of the significant financial and emotional impact flooding has on residents that live in flood prone parts of our city.

From Monday 25 August Council will be seeking feedback on the draft Hewitts Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan that looks at areas in the Hewitts Creek catchment, mainly covering Bulli and Thirroul.  It outlines the potential risks and impacts of floods on people, homes, roads, stormwater systems, parks, and other public spaces. The study also recommends practical ways to reduce current and future flood risks. These findings will help guide future planning and development in the area. I encourage people to review these documents, which will be available online or at Wollongong and Thirroul Libraries, and provide feedback.

Managing flood risk is an ongoing and continuous process with the Wollongong Flood Risk Management Study and Plan the next area to be updated.
