Supporting our community to kick goals

Friday 15 August 2025

We’re a city that loves our sports.

Right now, Wollongong City Council is calling for applications from sports clubs and associations for our Sports Grants program.

The program has a pool of money that can be used by local clubs to carry out works and improvements that make the sporting experience better for all.

We’re not talking multi-million dollar projects either. Just those works that improve how people interact with the spaces, play or socialise.

For example, in recent years we have contributed towards the Northern Districts Cricket Club’s infrastructure upgrade to their synthetic wicket training facility, and provided grant funds towards the installation of new perimeter security fencing at JJ Kelly Park’s rugby union field and to resurface the car park.

These projects are great examples of essential works that improve the player, supporter and spectator experience, but can sometimes be challenging for clubs to fund on their own.

At Council, we’re committed to supporting all levels of sport – from enthusiastic amateurs and super keen youngers, to weekend players embracing sport for social engagement, as well as aspiring and elite professional athletes.

It’s important to us that our community, regardless of their skillset, can pursue a wide range of sporting types within our local government area.

With limited spaces and facilities, and a lot of passionate sporting groups and organisations looking to use them, it can be challenging to get the balance right.

However, we’re keen to see where a funding boost from Council can facilitate projects and improve the facilities our city has on offer.

These could be, for example, lighting improvements that mean sports fields can be used for longer periods of time during the winter months, or renewed or enhanced facilities that provide for gender equity, accessibility and storage.

With a deadline of Friday 5 September, I’d encourage sporting clubs and associations to have a look at Council’s website for more information about the program, and how, to apply for funding.
