Climate Change Mitigation

Climate change mitigation is the technical term for the steps we take to reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions. These actions help slow down global warming and protect our environment. They include:

  • Switching to renewable energy sources,
  • Improving energy efficiency,
  • Reducing waste,
  • Choosing low-emission transport options, and
  • Preserving carbon sinks like trees, vegetation and mangroves.

Our Climate Change Mitigation Plan 2023 – 2030

Our Climate Change Mitigation Plan outlines how Council will work towards meeting our emissions reduction targets. It builds on the success of our 2020 – 2022 plan and shows our ongoing commitment to doing better.

50% reduction on community emissions by 2030

Net Zero Council emissions by 2030

Net Zero Wollongong emissions by 2050

To reach these goals, we’re working with other levels of government, businesses, industries and community groups. Together, we’re delivering key projects to reduce emissions from Council operations and across our community.

The plan responds to the latest climate science, which calls for urgent action from all levels of government. It focuses on practical technologies and opportunities that are already available or becoming more affordable, aiming to deliver the biggest emissions reductions as soon as possible.

Aligned with our Sustainable Wollongong 2030 Strategy, the plan takes an adaptive approach so we can respond to changes and keep our strategies effective.
