Children's Book Week® has been a fixture of Australia's literary landscape since 1945. Each year the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) highlights the importance of reading by showcasing and celebrating Australian children’s books, authors, and illustrators.
Book Week 2026 | Symphony of Stories
Book Week will return 22-28 August 2026 with a range of events, in-library displays, and a Short Story Competition.
Children's Book Week Short Story Competition
Write an original story of up to 500 words inspired by this year's Book Week artwork and/or characters to go in the running to win!
The Short Story Competition is a creative writing competition aimed at primary school-aged students.
Pick up an entry form at any of our library locations or download and print a copy. Fill in the entrant detail, including name, library card number, and guardian details.
Write up to 500 words on the back of the form, inspired by this year's Book Week artwork and/or characters.
If necessary, attach additional pages to your entry form with a staple.
One winner will be drawn at each library location by Friday 16 October. Each prize pack (valued over $100) includes: a tote bag, CBCA 2026 Book Week shortlisted books, journal, and more!
Prizes for the 2026 Book Week Short Story Competition are proudly donated by the Friends of Wollongong City Libraries.
1. Pick up an entry form from any Wollongong City Libraries location or download and print a copy
2. Write a short story of up to 500 words inspired by this year's Book Week artwork and/or characters
3. Fill in the entry form on the back page with a parent/caregiver
4. Drop off your entry form to any library location by 5pm Friday 25 September.
Your parent/carer will also need to read and agree to the terms and conditions before entering the Book Week Short Story Competition.
