Paint and many paint-related products should never be placed in your household bin.
Some types of paint can be dropped off for recycling at our Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Kembla Grange. However there are also many common paint-related products that are not accepted. Please read below for more details.
See below for ways you can safely get rid of unwanted paint products.
Paints accepted at the Community Recycling Centre
You can drop off up to 20 litres of each of the following types of paint.
Check the 'What you can drop off' section of our CRC page to confirm availability before you visit.
- Water-based paints
- Oil-based paints
- Primers and undercoats
- Varnishes, shellacs, urethanes (single component) and sealers
- Wood stains
- Floor paints
- Interior and exterior architectural paint (water and solvent based)
- Deck coatings
- Wood coatings (containing no pesticides).
Aerosol paints
You can drop aerosol paints off at the CRC, but please note that these go in the separate aerosol drop-off container, not in the paints section. Please ask our staff for directions.
Paint-related products not accepted at the Community Recycling Centre
These items cannot be dropped off at the CRC and should never go in your household bin.
- Anti-fouling coatings
- Automotive paints, coatings and finishes
- Bagged renders
- Caulking components, epoxies, glues or adhesives
- Colourants and tints
- Industrial maintenance coatings
- Isocyanates
- Melamine, metal and rust preventative
- Metal coatings
- Paint additives
- Paint stripper
- Paint thinner, mineral spirits or solvents
- Paint washings
- Resins
- Roof patch or repair
- Tar or bitumen-based products
- Texture coatings
- Traffic paints
- Two-component coatings.
