Investigating Textile Waste

Textile waste is a stitch up, we’ll help you unpick it

Stage/s S1, S2, S3, S5
Subject Science and Technology, Geography
Location We come to your school
Cost Free
Duration 45 minutes per session (we can offer 3 sessions per day)

Textiles are a huge contributor to landfill, but if made from natural fibres much of it can become soil mulch. Your school could help unpick a huge waste issue and could reap the benefits by participating in this activity.

Please note

A package will be sent to the school prior the activity to look at a landfill video and to identify things in the school that are natural fibres that could be repurposed.

Students will:

  • Identify the difference between synthetic fibres and natural fibres
  • Participate in experiments to monitor the rate of decomposition of natural fibres and changes to the micro and macro organisms affected by this
  • Mulch a small garden area with natural fibres for on going analysis and contribution to a Citizen Science project
  • Watch a video on landfill and discuss opportunities to reduce textile waste, using results from their experiments
  • Participate in an audit of their uniform and ask questions about waste management for the circular economy
