Culture Mix Community Grants

Culture Mix is Wollongong’s new contemporary multicultural festival, and it's back on Saturday 19 October 2024 in Wollongong CBD!

This one-day event will showcase and celebrate the vibrant and diverse community who call Wollongong home - through food, music, dance, art and workshops.

We invited Wollongong-based multicultural and First Nations organisations, groups, and communities to apply for one-off funding to develop content for Culture Mix 2024.

Applications for this program have now closed.

Funding through this program is open to:

  • Multicultural community and cultural organisations, groups and individuals who live in the Wollongong Local Government Area.
  • Artists and communities who are Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islanders and / or culturally and linguistically diverse.
  • Physically and socially isolated communities.

Applicants who were not involved in Culture Mix 2023 are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications will not be accepted from:

  • Government departments or agencies
  • Profit-making individuals or organisations
  • Applicants who have not acquitted a previous grant from Wollongong City Council.

Applicants must identify and declare any actual, potential or perceived conflict of interest (if applicable) in accordance with Council’s Code of Conduct PDF, 614.07 KB .

Activities that could be supported through this program include rehearsals and / or development for:

  • Live music
  • Dance performance
  • Roving performers
  • Visual art works
  • Visual art interactive workshops
  • Festival decoration.

Your application should show how you will:

  • Work together with community members to create a performance or activity
  • Make or create something new, or teach a cultural activity and build skills for newcomers or beginners
  • Build on an existing performance or activity so that it is different and exciting
  • Involve culturally diverse community members - a mix of people can be involved
  • Manage the budget for your activity
  • Be available for the Culture Mix festival on Saturday 19 October 2024.

You may also wish to:

  • Make or create something interactive for the festival
  • Collaborate with another community or cultural group/s.

Funding can be used for:

  • Choreographer, director, artist or creative mentors (make sure you put their name/s in your application)
  • Rehearsal space hire
  • Rehearsal time
  • Development time
  • Costume/s
  • Equipment and materials.

Funding will not be provided for:

  • Performance at the event (a separate agreement and performance payment will apply to successful applicants)
  • Travel costs to the event
  • Food or drinks at the event
  • Activities that take place outside the Wollongong Local Government Area
  • Activities by individuals or organisations that are party-political or whose purpose is primarily political, government departments or agencies, foundations or grant making bodies, or have a primary focus on fundraising
  • Activities by individuals or organisations that seek to exclude or offend parts of the community
  • Activities by individuals or organisations that have an outstanding debt to Wollongong City Council or that have failed to comply with the terms and conditions of any previous funding agreement with Wollongong City Council
  • Projects that will financially benefit a profit-making individual, organisation or Government Department
  • Applications from current Wollongong City Council employees, their immediate families and Council contractors
  • Applications from individuals or organisations who are currently supported by Wollongong City Council through a funding program for the same concept and / or activity
  • Where applications are received by Wollongong City Council after the published closing date.

No more than $2,000 (excluding GST) is available to each successful application.

Successful applicants will be advised of the final amount approved for their project.

Please note, any grant funding provided is for the development of an activity for Culture Mix only. There will be a separate agreement and payment in place for your performance at the festival.
