The creative project is being run by Wollongong City Council and Illawarra based artist Stephanie Quirk. Stephanie is an emerging artist with a growing career spanning local, Sydney and international exhibitions. Her work thrives in community engagement, and she specialises in painting, performance, and sculptural installation.

Artist Stephanie Quirk said that the new artwork is a collaboration between students from Lindsay Park Public, West Wollongong Public and Keira High Schools.

“The schools embarked on a journey to celebrate and explore cultural identities and connections. I held workshops which ignited conversations around culture and belonging, with students exploring the vibrant threads that compose their individual and collective heritage,” she said.

“One student’s insight, that culture is about belonging, gave rise to the project’s title and embodies the essence of the artwork.

“As project leader, I foresee "You Belong Here, I Belong Here" as more than art – it's a catalyst for conversations. Students witnessed cultures intertwining, cultivating empathy and appreciation. The sculptures symbolise our intertwined roles, much like a forest ecosystem where every tree plays a vital part.

“The sculptures stand as reminders, inspiring future generations to celebrate diversity, amplify voices, and strengthen community bonds. "You Belong Here, I Belong Here" encapsulates the spirit of unity, resonating through the landscape of cultures we call home here in Wollongong.”

The artwork will be exhibited at Culture Mix on Saturday 21 October.

A few words from our student artists:

What did you learn about yourself, or a classmate?

“Realised how much I enjoy art and making art.”

“No one needs a degree or special skills or talent to make art. All of us can do it.”

“We all started with same prompts, but all went different ways, different perspective.”

What do you think the audience might think when they see these artworks?

“It looks really good.”

“Surprised, it might make them think about new ideas.”

“WOW!!!”

What part of the workshop did you like the most?

“Felt free and creative. Could be messy – not the same rules as in class.”

“Doing this with my friends.”

Seeing ideas and artworks evolve, change.”
