Friday Fast Five – Did you know your library offers this?

Friday 21 July 2023

Right now, we’re asking for feedback on our draft Library Strategy 2024-2028, which will guide how we create a world-class library service for our community.

The draft Strategy is based on a vision that libraries are “the heart of our community where everyone can discover, learn and connect’. Everyone is welcome to share their thoughts on the draft Strategy before the 6 August 2023.

But while you’re thinking about what you want from the libraries of the future, did you know our libraries do these things now…

1. Young Crafters

This casual program is for young people between 12-18 who are interested in all things craft. Whether it’s Granny Squares, scrapbooking or model building, this program welcomes all young crafters. It’s on at Wollongong Library during term time on Tuesdays from 3.30-5pm.

2. Tech Help

Get one-on-one tech help to learn how to use your devices, set up an email account, borrow an eBook or explore the internet safely. Targeted at adults, sessions are available at both Warrawong and Wollongong Libraries.

3. Sewing Machine Safety Induction

You read it right, at Wollongong Library you can learn how to safely operate the on-site Janome sewing machines! It’s an essential course for beginners and experienced sewers looking to book and use sewing machines. It covers sewing machine set-up, operation and pack up.

4. Preschool Storytime

Brush up on your twinkle, twinkle and Baby Shark at Preschool Storytime. Most of our libraries host regular Storytimes for three-to-five year olds where books, sing-a-longs and craft activities keep everyone entertained.

5. Author Talks

Mikey Robins, Rosemary Kariuki and Chris Hammer are just three of the authors set to share their words of wisdom over the next few months with booklovers. The Friends of Wollongong Library have a regular program of author talks – although they do sell out so get in quick to reserve your seat.

These are just five fantastic programs our libraries offer. There’s so much more to explore. Our libraries have an exciting program of music events including a sold out performance from LYHRA vocal trio and band, WollCon’s Early Childhood Music Education (or CHiME) at Dapto Library and an upcoming performance by The Con Jazz Orchestra and the Shannon Barnett Quartet at  Thirroul  Library on Sunday 29 October. Plus, there are activities like the Old Boys Social Club, Anime & Manga Club for young people, and HSC support initiatives as well as all the other resources – books, magazines, eBooks, DVDs and CDs, that you’d expect.

For information about all these programs and more visit the Wollongong City Libraries website or chat to staff at our local library. We’ve libraries in Helensburgh, Thirroul, Corrimal, Wollongong, Unanderra, Dapto and Warrawong.
