Indian Myna Bird Action Program Terms of Agreement

People taking part in the Wollongong Indian Myna Bird Action Program must follow the terms of agreement below.

Operation of trap

The trap operator must:

  • Read and understand the instructions for use of the trap before trapping begins
  • Be committed to the humane operation of the trapping system
  • Make sure no native birds or other wildlife are harmed during trapping
  • Be available to monitor and service the trap on a daily basis
  • Be 18 years of age or over.

Location of trap

Traps must be located on private land only. No traps are to be placed on publicly owned land.

Approval must be obtained before trapping on any land owned and/or managed by another individual.

Other considerations for trap placement are theft / vandalism, public safety, public perception, access for dogs and cats, and shade for trapped birds.

Euthanasia

Council will assist by providing humane euthanasing facilities for the community. If residents wish to undertake euthanasia, it is the responsibility of the trap operator and must be carried out in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) produced by the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

Trappers must read and be familiar with the procedures outlined in the SOPs for Methods of euthanasia (GEN001) and Trapping of pest birds (BIR002), before conducting any control activities. Copies of the SOPs are available for download from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment website.

Disposal of carcasses

Carcasses can be disposed of in a standard domestic garbage bin as long as they are contained in a bag. Alternatively, the carcasses can be buried within the property.

Animal Welfare Protocol for the Management of Traps and Birds

  • Traps are to be designed specifically for Indian Mynas and are to have a release opening to allow any native birds to escape. The trap operator must understand the instructions for use of the trap before trapping begins and be committed to the humane operation of the trapping system.
  • You must make sure no native birds or other wildlife are harmed during trapping. Store traps with wires doors open, or the entrance blocked, to avoid accidentally trapping wildlife.
  • You must be available to monitor and service the trap on a daily basis. Traps must be checked morning and evening.
  • Do not use seed-based food in traps as this can attract native birds.
  • The traps must contain food and clean water for any trapped birds.
  • The birds are not to be exposed to undue stress while trapped. Avoid handling or approaching the traps too frequently.
  • Trapped Indian Mynas must be disposed of within 24 hours of capture.
  • The birds are not to be treated cruelly and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 must be adhered to at all times.

Feedback and monitoring

Please record the number of birds sighted and captured by using the monitoring data sheets. This information is greatly appreciated and will help us with future research on Indian Myna bird populations and distribution within the Wollongong City Council area.

Use of information for Indian Myna research purposes

Data provided to Wollongong City Council on Indian Mynas, including your name and address, are collected and held by Council for the purposes of research into Indian Mynas. It is intended that data will be collated and used to better understand Indian Myna distribution, abundance and impacts.

Providing data to Council is voluntary. Council may supply the data to consultants and / or to the MynaScan website for the purpose of undertaking Indian Myna research. Council will comply with reasonable requests to modify or delete data provided to us.
