Kerbside Electric Vehicle Chargers

We've installed kerbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers at five convenient locations in Wollongong, Austinmer and Thirroul.

This is a pilot partnership between Wollongong City Council, EVX Australia and Endeavour Energy.

The chargers are mounted on existing power poles making them cost-effective and efficient to install. This also means they have no footprint on public land or green space.

This project is a key action of our Climate Change Mitigation Plan as we work toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for the Wollongong community by 2050.

EV charger locations

The EV chargers are kerbside at the locations listed below.

Common questions about our EV chargers

The information below has been prepared by Wollongong City Council, EVX Australia and Endeavour Energy.

The two main things we considered when these locations were chosen were:

  1. Locations that are convenient and accessible for EV drivers, such as near shopping centres, public transport hubs, and town centres.
  2. Areas where access to charging is difficult for residents with no off-street parking or limited ability to charge at home.

We also considered the impact on local parking, traffic, and availability of electricity.

We invited community feedback on the proposed pilot locations in mid-2023. 178 submissions were received, and the vast majority of people who responded were supportive of the pilot.

A pole-mounted charger is an electric vehicle charging station mounted on an existing electricity power pole where there is readily available access to power from the pole.

The pole-mounted model is cheaper to put in place because we don't have to build new structures to create them. They are also easier to remove and re-install at other locations.

The time taken for a full charge will vary by model and depends on the battery size and the maximum charge rate.

Average charge times from 0 to 100% using level 2 (AC) EV Charging Stations will take anywhere between 6 to 9 hours. You can get an estimated charge time based on your EV model and charging method using this calculator.

We expect residents to use these chargers to top up their vehicle while accessing nearby amenities.

As of December 2023, the cost to charge at an EVX charging station is $0.50/kWh.

An average size EV battery is 60 kWh, so a full charge would cost $30. Depending on the EV model and style of driving, this would provide anywhere between 350 km to 450 km of range.

To compare costs:

  • An EV would cost $7.00 to cover 100 km at an electricity rate of $0.50/kWh
  • A petrol car would cost $14.60 to cover 100 km at a fuel rate of $2.00/litre.

Note: These kerbside AC chargers do not come with a cable. You need to bring your own Type 2 charging cable.

To get started, charging with EVX, download the EVX Driver's App, available on the App Store and Google Play.

No. These spaces are reserved for EV charging only. They have been placed in areas where there is high EV uptake and a localised need for charging.

Wollongong City Council’s parking compliance team will check regularly to make sure these spaces are used only by electric vehicles while charging.

Under NSW Government Road Rules 2014 (item 203), the maximum penalty for incorrect usage of electric vehicle parking area is 20 penalty units or $129.

The trial is expected to run for one year.

During that time, Wollongong City Council, EVX, and Endeavour Energy will look at patterns and levels of use, impact on parking and traffic etc.

There will be another opportunity for people to give feedback to Wollongong City Council at the end of the trial. This feedback will be considered as we make future decisions about EV chargers across our city.

Installating local EV chargers will encourage and support more people to use electric cars.

Electric vehicles produce zero tail-pipe emissions, which immediately reduces air particulate pollutants. Emissions may still be emitted from the energy used and will depend on the source of energy.

If charged from the Australian grid, grid electricity is considered to produce 30% less emissions for the same distance covered in a petrol car.

EVX charging stations use ‘Green Power’, which means the energy is sourced mostly from renewable energy generation in Australia.

The five chargers being installed through this trial will be owned and operated by EVX.

Wollongong City Council is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the Local Government Area and supporting residents in the switch to electric vehicles.

Council’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure on Public Land Policy PDF, 284.21 KB guides third-party providers to set up, operate and maintain charging equipment on Council-owned or managed land.

While these are the first kerbside EV charging stations installed in our city, they join two public fast chargers at Stewart Street East car park in Wollongong. There are 18 charging locations (as of December 2023) across the Wollongong City Council area.

You can visit Plugshare to find EV charging locations.

We hope to see more charging locations added in future, and will look for future funding opportunities through the NSW Government’s Electric vehicle destination charging grant program. Local businesses can also apply for this funding to assist with the installation of chargers.
